Writing Contest Winners Announced; Guest Author: Tim Tingle

The Garland Area Parent Association will announce the winners of our Creative Writing Contest at our next Association meeting on Tuesday, January 24, at 7:00 pm in the Community Room of the South Garland Branch Library, 4845 S. Broadway at Oates Drive.

Special guest Tim Tingle will talk to parents and students about professional writing and what it takes to get a book published. Mr. Tingle is an Oklahoma Choctaw and award-winning author. A regular speaker at the American Library Association, he has guest-lectured on numerous college campuses, and was a writing instructor at the University of Oklahoma in 1998-1999. He has also completed eleven speaking tours for the U.S. Department of Defense, speaking to children of military personnel stationed in Germany.

His most popular children's book, Crossing Bok Chitto (2006), has won numerous awards including the Texas Bluebonnet Award (2008-2009), Texas Institute of Letters Best Children's Book (2007) and the Editor's Choice from the New York Times Book Review (2006). While he is in town, GAPAGT has arranged for him to make school presentations to the students at Armstrong Elementary and Walnut Glen Academy, in addition to his evening presentation for our Parent Association. A short association meeting will be held prior to the winners being announced.

We hope to see you there!

TAGT Scholarship Opportunities

Parents! You can use the following links to view presentations to encourage your GT student to apply for Texas Association for Gifted and Talented (TAGT) scholarships. Please note that teacher recommendations need to be strong, and that one or two real life examples go a lot farther than superlatives that don’t tell the story of the child. This is key when applying for scholarships.

Mission Statement

The Garland Area Parent Association for Gifted and Talented (GAPAGT) is an independent volunteer organization of parents, educators, and community partners supporting gifted and talented students in the Garland ISD, including the cities of Garland, Sachse and Rowlett, Texas. The Association offers parenting resources, advocacy information, and partnership opportunities to promote appropriate educational services for the unique social, emotional and intellectual needs of all gifted and talented students.

Join the IB Parent Connection in Google Groups

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is GISD's high school program for academically gifted students. Whether you are considering it or supporting a student who is currently in it, be part of the forum at
http://groups.google.com/group/ib-parent-connection?hl=en.

Parents of current and future IB students are involved in an important decision-making process regarding the education of their child and may be keen to understand the IB programmes as well as the challenges and advantages they may bring. The IB Diploma Programme cultivates the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn, and work in a rapidly globalizing world.
