Elementary - The 4th/5th Grade Talent Search is a resource for parents, school personnel, and local communities that focuses on the identification, development, and support of talented 4th-6th graders.By taking advanced above-level testing gifted students and their families gain a far better understanding of where the student stands in relation to his/her gifted peers and what level of educational challenge is appropriate.Duke TIP offers students the opportunity to take the EXPLORE test which is designed for eighth graders.For more details, visit http://www.tip.duke.edu/talent_searches/faqs/
Middle School - The 7th Grade Talent Search identifies academically talented students based on test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school. Candidates are identified and invited to complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination. Duke TIP then provides the participants with comparative information concerning their academic abilities and resources for unique educational opportunities.Taking the SAT or ACT in seventh grade gives students a chance to practice and become familiar with the exams that play a major role in college admissions. Students' early experience with the college entrance exam is helpful in preparing them to take it in high school. High School - For students who participate in the Elementary or Middle School Talent Searches, benefits continue on into high school.The Duke TIP Scholar Weekends are designed for students in grades 8-12 (depending on site) to take short courses during weekend-long programs. Courses introduce topics that might not be available in students’ local schools. They provide enrichment, a glimpse into the collegiate experience, and an opportunity to meet other similarly motivated students. In addition, the Duke TIP Summer Studies Programs (http://www.tip.duke.edu/summer_programs/) offer students in grades 7-10 the opportunity to learn highly challenging material at a rate suited to their advanced abilities in a 3-week summercourse.Other options include e-studies and independent learning programs which offer high school students flexibility for pursuing areas of interest outside of school.
